Prof. Tianshou (Tim) Zhao is currently the Cheong Ying Chan Professor of Engineering and Environment of the Department of Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering at HKUST, the Director of the HKUST Energy Institute, and a Senior Fellow of the HKUST Jockey Club Institute for Advanced Study. He received his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, both in Engineering Thermo-physics, from Tianjin University, China, and PhD from the University of Hawaii at Manoa, USA. Prof. Zhao is an internationally renowned expert in energy engineering and has made seminal contributions in the areas of fuel cells, flow batteries, multi-scale multiphase heat and mass transport with electrochemical reactions, and computational-modeling. He is author/co-author of over 190 journal papers with more than 6,000 citations and an h-index of 44 (Web of Science). Moreover, 16 of his papers are featured on the list of the ESI highly cited papers and 3 of them were awarded with the Most Cited Article Award by Elsevier. His scientific research has been widely recognized by many recent awards, including the ASME Fellow award, the Croucher Senior Fellowship award, the Overseas Distinguished Young Scholars Award (NSFC), and the Yangtze River Chair Professorship. In addition to his outstanding scholastic achievements and exceptional research credentials, he has also received numerous teaching excellence awards, including the Bechtel Foundation Engineering Teaching Excellence Award from the HKUST. In the international community, Prof. Zhao serves as Editor of the Royal Society of Chemistry (RSC) Energy & Environment Series, Regional Editor of Applied Thermal Engineering, and has been a member of the editorial board for more than 20 international journals. He was elected a member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2019.
