IAS Sin Wai Kin Professor of Chinese Culture YAN Lianke Elected as The Inaugural Royal Society of Literature International Writer

IAS Sin Wai Kin Professor of Chinese Culture Prof. YAN Lianke was elected one of the 12 Inaugural Royal Society of Literature (RSL) International Writers on November 30, 2021. The RSL International Writers is a new lifetime literary honor which recognizes writers’ contribution from across the globe to literature in English, and the power of literature to transcend borders. Prof. Yan was the first and only Chinese writer who received this honor.

The RSL International Writers program was announced last year as part of RSL 200, a five-year festival launched in 2020 with a series of major new initiatives and 60 new appointments championing the great diversity of writing and writers.

IAS Senior Visiting Fellow Prof. Evelyn HU receives the 2021 IEEE/RSE James Clerk Maxwell Medal

IAS Senior Visiting Fellow Prof. Evelyn HU, Tarr-Coyne Professor of Applied Physics and of Electrical Engineering at Harvard University, has been awarded the 2021 IEEE/RSE James Clerk Maxwell Medal from the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) and the Royal Society of Edinburgh (RSE) for her “leadership in nanoscale science and engineering, and for seminal contributions at the intersection of semiconductor electronics and photonics”.

Established in 2006, the IEEE/RSE James Clerk Maxwell Medal is one of the highest IEEE awards given annually to recognize outstanding individuals with “groundbreaking contributions that have had an exceptional impact on the development of electronics and electrical engineering, or related fields”. The prize presentation was held during the 2021 IEEE Vision, Innovation, and Challenges Summit and Honors Ceremony in May. In the summit, Prof. Hu had shared her experience and insights in the pursuit of advancement in material science and quantum computing in a virtual chat (Link).

IAS TT and WF Chao Foundation Professor George SMOOT Chairs the 2021 Hang Lung Mathematics Awards Steering Committee

Prof. George SMOOT, IAS TT and WF Chao Foundation Professor and Chair Professor of Physics, is Chair of the 2021 Hang Lung Mathematics Awards (HLMA) Steering Committee which comprises a panel of internationally renowned academic luminaries and educators. Co-founded by Prof. YAU Shing Tung, a world-renowned mathematician and a Fields Medalist, HLMA is a biennial acclaimed mathematics research competition established in Hong Kong in 2004 to empower Hong Kong secondary school students to realize their creative potential in mathematics and sciences. This year, HLMA is co-organized by HKUST and is now open for registration.

IAS Si Yuan Professor Gunther UHLMANN Wins the 2021 Birkhoff Prize in Applied Mathematics

Prof. Gunther UHLMANN, IAS Si Yuan Professor and Chair Professor of Mathematics, has been awarded the 2021 AMS-SIAM George David Birkhoff Prize in Applied Mathematics for “his fundamental and insightful contributions to inverse problems and partial differential equations, as well as for his incisive work on boundary rigidity, microlocal analysis and cloaking.”

The prize was established in 1967 in honor of Prof. George David BIRKHOFF, an American mathematician who formulated the ergodic theorem. Jointly awarded by the American Mathematical Society (AMS) and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) every three years, the honor recognizes scholars who have outstanding contributions to applied mathematics.
