The research team, Daya Bay Collaboration, led by Prof LUK Kam-Biu, IAS Senior Visiting Fellow and Visiting Professor of Physics, has won the 2016 Breakthrough Prize in Fundamental Physics together with four other research teams “for the fundamental discovery and exploration of neutrino oscillations, revealing a new frontier beyond, and possibly far beyond, the standard model of particle physics”. Prof Luk and his collaborator, Prof Yifang Wang, from the Institute of High Energy Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences are the leaders of the Daya Bay Reactor Neutrino Experiment with a team of over 270 scientists from the US, Mainland China, Taiwan and the Czech Republic. It is an unprecedented prize for Chinese scientists and their discovery on the measurement of θ13 enables the future search for charge parity violation in neutrino oscillation.
