IAS Visiting Professor Shuji Nakamura received Nobel Prize

IAS extends its heartiest congratulations to Prof Shuji NAKAMURA, IAS Visiting Professor, for being awarded the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics by the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences for “the invention of efficient blue light-emitting diodes which has enabled bright and energy-saving white light sources”. Prof Nakamura is widely recognized as pioneer in light emitters based on wide-bandgap semiconductors. With the invention of the blue laser diode and the blue, green and white light-emitting diodes (LED) which indicate major breakthrough in lighting technology, Prof Nakamura is honored as the “Father of blue LED”.

IAS Faculty Received Optical Society Award

Prof Ching W. TANG, IAS Bank of East Asia Professor and Chair Professor of Electronic & Computer Engineering, Chemistry and Physics, has received the 2014 Nick Holonyak Jr. Award from the Optical Society (OSA) for the discovery of efficient thin-film organic light-emitting diodes (OLED), which has led to novel display and lighting products. The award is presented to an individual who has made significant contributions to optics based on semiconductor-based optical devices and materials.

IAS Visiting Professor received 2014 Kavli Prize

IAS conveys its heartiest congratulations to IAS Visiting Professor, Sir John PENDRY for being awarded the Kavil Prize in the field of nanoscience jointly by the Norwegian Academy of Science and Letters, The Kavil Foundation and the Norwegian Ministry of Education and Research. Sir John’s work on developing the theory underlying new optical nanoscale materials with unprecedented properties for formation of “perfect lenses” is recognized.
