IAS PROGRAM ON INVERSE PROBLEMS, IMAGING AND PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
Inverse Source Problems for Wave Equations
Prof Guanghui Hu, Beijing Computational Science Research Center
Date : 7 Mar 2018 (Wednesday)
Time : 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Venue : IAS4042, 4/F, Lo Ka Chung Building, Lee Shau Kee Campus, HKUST

Abstract

The speaker and his collaborators consider wave propagation caused by an inhomogeneous source term embedded in a homogeneous medium. The source term is supposed to be the product of a spatial function and a temporal function with compact support. By Fourier transform, the inverse source problems in the time-domain are transformed to equivalent problems in the Fourier domain with multi-frequency data. They show uniqueness and stability in determining both spatial and temporal functions from radiated wave fields on a large sphere or at one receiver over a finite time interval in three dimensions.

About the speaker

Prof Guanghui Hu obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics from the Institute of Applied Mathematics at Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2009. During 2009-2016, he held a postdoctoral research position at the Weierstrass Institute in Berlin, Germany. He joined the Beijing Computational Science Research Center in 2016 and is currently an Assistant Professor of Applied and Computational Mathematics.

Prof Hu’s research area includes direct and inverse wave scattering problems in acoustics, electromagnetism and elasticity. In 2016, he was selected as a member of Thousand Young Talents Program of China.
