Abstract

In 1982, the rapid growth and high demand of cross-border traffic prompted an agreement between the Hong Kong government and the Guangdong government for an improvement of connections in the Pearl River Delta by opening up new road links. The Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is such an ongoing construction project which consists of a series of bridges and tunnels crossing the Lingdingyang channel connecting Hong Kong, Macao and Zhuhai, three major cities in the Pearl River Delta. The proposed budget of the 50 km link was US$10.6 billion (HK$83 billion). With its length, it would become one of the landmarks within the area. Advocates suggest that by slashing travel times between the eastern and western banks of the Pearl River Delta, parts of less-developed southern China will gain improved access to global markets through Hong Kong. In addition, it is said that Hong Kong will benefit from this project in the long term, through the enhanced flow of labor and goods between China and the rest of the world. The construction of the proposed bridge can lead to a deeper economic integration between Hong Kong and Pearl River Delta Region (PRD) in addition to perfecting the regional transport network and logistic connections. To date, more than half of the main construction task has been completed, but there are still numerous technical difficulties need to break through in the future.

In this lecture, the speaker will introduce the background, design philosophy, the impact on the region economy and social life, sustainability consideration of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge. The construction strategy and technique as well as special consideration on the durability improvement of the bridge will also be introduced.
