IAS / SCHOOL OF SCIENCE JOINT LECTURE
Linking Cell-level Tradeoffs in Physiology, Movement
and Reproduction to Harmful Algal Bloom Dynamics:
Observations, Models, and Directions for Future Research
Prof Daniel Grünbaum, Professor of Oceanography, University of Washington
Date : 20 Jun 2014 (Friday)
Time : 4:00 - 5:30 pm
Venue : Leung Yat Sing Lecture Theater (LT-F), HKUST
Photos Details

Harmful Algal Blooms arise through interactions between environmental conditions, population dynamics, and cell-level organismal characteristics. In Puget Sound, US, high-impact Harmful Algal Blooms of Heterosigma akashiwo and Alexandrium spp. are hypothesized to result from large-scale emergence from “hotspots” of benthic populations. Prof Daniel Grünbaum from the University of Washington presents the laboratory methods to quantify movement and cell division rates in Heterosigma and Alexandrium, associated with transitions between water column and sediments.

The lecture is free and open to all. Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.
