Abstract

Over the past decades, environmental science research in China has made tremendous progress, mainly due to the many emerging environmental problems as a result of industrialization and governmental support. Research papers published in top-tier international journals by scholars from China have increased exponentially. In this talk, the speaker will highlight some of the major progress in environmental studies in China, and discuss the way forward. According to the speaker, environmental studies should directly address the human health impacts as well as the many natural systems that are currently under considerable anthropogenic influences.

About the speaker

Prof. Jiang Guibin received his PhD in Environmental Analytical Chemistry from the Research Center for Eco-Environmental Sciences (RCEES) of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) in 1991. After spending four years as Visiting Scholar at the National Research Council Canada and a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Antwerp in Belgium, he returned to RCEES in 1996 as a Professor of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology. He established the State Key Laboratory of Environmental Chemistry and Ecotoxicology and has been the Director since then. He has also been appointed as the Director of RCEES since 2004.

Prof. Jiang’s research is mainly focused on analytical chemistry and environmental chemistry. His methodical and comprehensive research resulted in significant achievements on analytical development and environmental characterization of persistent organic pollutants (POPs), and the speciation of organometallic compounds, which contributed to the improvement and internationalization of these scientific fields in China. He was the Associate Editor of Environmental Science and Technology and the Co-Editor-in-Chief of NanoImpact. He is also on the editorial board of various journals such as Analytica Chimica Acta, Chemosphere and the International Journal of Environmental Analytical Chemistry, to name a few.

Prof. Jiang is currently the President of China Association for Instrumental Analysis and the Vice President of Chinese Chemical Society and Chinese Society of Toxicology. He was awarded the National Natural Science Award in 2003 and 2011 and the Chang Jiang Scholars Achievement Award in 2007 for his outstanding research on the analytical methodology, distribution, accumulation and toxicity of POPs. He is also elected an Academician of CAS and a Fellow of the Third World Academy of Sciences and the Royal Society of Chemistry.
