IAS DISTINGUISHED LECTURE
Extracting Trend and Instantaneous Frequency from Nonlinear and Non-stationary Data
Prof Thomas Hou, California Institute of Technology, Visiting Member of HKUST Institute for Advanced Study
Date : 6 Dec 2011 (Tuesday)
Time : 3:00 - 4:30pm
Venue : Room 5583 (5/F via Lifts 27-30), HKUST
Summary Details

Extracting trend from highly nonlinear and non-stationary data has many practical applications ranging from bio-medical signal analysis to econometrics, finance, and geophysical fluid dynamics. Many of the existing methods use predetermined basis and are not completely adaptive. Inspired by the Empirical Mode Decomposition method (EMD) and the recently developed compressed sensing theory, IAS Visiting Member Prof Thomas Hou introduces a data-driven time-frequency analysis method using nonlinear optimization.

Free and open to the public. Seating is on a first-come first-served basis.
