Abstract
The lecture will discuss the studies in the dominantly inherited spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 and how the speaker is applying insight gained from SCA1 research to more common neurodegenerative disorders such as Parkinson and Alzheimer disease.
About the speaker
Prof Huda Zoghbi obtained her BS in Biology from American University of Beirut, Lebanon in 1975 and MD from Meharry Medical College, USA in 1979. In 1988, she joined Baylor College of Medicine as an Assistant Professor and is currently a Professor of Pediatrics & Molecular and Human Genetics. She has also been an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute since 1996.
Prof Zoghbi’s research focuses on molecular basis of neurodegenerative & neurodevelopmental disorders and; nervous system development. Prof Zoghbi has been elected the member of US National Academy of Sciences, the US National Academy of Medicine and also the fellow of American Association for the Advancement of Science. She and Prof Adrian Bird (University of Edinburgh) have been awarded the 2016 Shaw Prize in Life Science and Medicine.
