About the speaker
Dr John C. McKew received his BS in Chemistry & Biochemistry, Stony Brook University, New York in 1986 and PhD in Chemistry from University of California at Davis in 1991. He joined Wyeth Research (formerly known as the Genetics Institute, Inc.) in Cambridge in 1993 as a research scientist and left in 2010 as an Associate Director Exploratory Chemistry. He then joined the US National Center for Advancing Translational Sciences (NCATS) within the US National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2010 as an Acting Scientific Director of the Division of Preclinical Innovation and finally joined the aTyr Pharma as the Vice President, Research in 2014.
Dr McKew’s research interests focused on academia and the pharmaceutical industry leading and managing drug discovery teams from hit-to-lead through clinical development. He successfully developed the Therapeutics for Rare and Neglected Diseases Program (TRND) at the NIH from concept to fully functional intramural research program that has delivered multiple clinical candidates in its first three years.
Dr McKew received numerous awards including the Heroes of Rare Diseases Research awarded to TRND by the FDA in 2013, the NIH Director’s award in 2015, 2013 and 2012, and the Wyeth Publication of the Year Awards in 2006, 2007 and 2008.
