Abstract
The speaker will describe recent progress on the distribution of prime numbers, in particular the existence of infinitely many prime pairs with bounded gaps.
About the speaker
Prof Yitang Zhang received his BSc and MSc degrees from Peking University in 1982 and 1985 respectively. He obtained his PhD in Mathematics from Purdue University in 1991. Since 1999, he has taught at University of New Hampshire, where he is currently Professor of Mathematics. In 2013, Prof Zhang published a paper in the Annals of Mathematics which proves that there are infinitely many pairs of prime numbers which differ by 70 million or less. This proof is the first to establish the existence of a finite bound for prime gaps, resolving a weak form of the twin prime conjecture. Prof Zhang has been awarded the Morningside Special Achievement Award in Mathematics and the Ostrowski Prize in 2013, and the Frank Nelson Cole Prize in Number Theory from the American Mathematical Society and the Rolf Schock Prize in Mathematics in 2014.
