Abstract
Microstructure plays an important role in determining the mechanical properties of concrete. The concrete properties can be tuned or tailored by modifying its microstructure. Therefore, optimizing microstructure is an effective method to improve service performance of concrete structure. This presentation will introduce the concept of concrete microstructure, the design of materials microstructure, and microstructure optimization for interfacial transition zone and pore structure. How to control the micro-cracking through microstructural engineering will also be discussed. In addition, influences of some new emerging techniques on concrete microstructure enhancement will also be briefly summarized and analyzed.
About the speaker
Prof Changwen Miao is Professor of Materials Science and Engineering at Southeast University and also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Jiangsu Research Institute of Building Science.
Prof Miao and his research team have devoted to the research areas including concrete admixture, high performance cementitious material and high performance technology. His major achievements include: invented a series of high performance concrete admixtures to optimize the concrete microstructure and improve its service performance; developed ecological high and ultrahigh performance structural concrete; created early stage deformation testing system for concrete; firstly established the evaluation method and service life prediction system for the concrete durability under coupling factors from load and environment; invented a kind of rapid patching admixture which could make concrete function up in 4 hours after patching and have long time performance stability. He has invented 18 Chinese patents and published 101 academic papers and 3 monographs.
Prof Miao received numerous awards including three National awards for Progress in Science and Technology for contributions to scientific research and application technology in the field of construction materials. He is a Member of the Chinese Academy of Engineering.
