Abstract
New results on expander graphs and spectral gaps in SL^2 and SU(d) will be presented and applications to hyperbolic lattice point counting, prime sieving, geometry and computer science.
About the speaker
Jean Bourgain has been a Professor at the Institute for Advanced Study, Princeton since 1994. He obtained his PhD from the Free University of Brussels in 1977. He was a Professor of Mathematics at the Free University of Brussel from 1981 to 1985, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champagne from 1985 to 2006 and at the Institut des Hautes Études Scientifiques, France from 1985 to 1995. He is a Foreign Member of the Academics of Science of France, Poland and Sweden.
Prof Bourgain’s work was noteworthy for the versatility it displayed in applying ideas from wide-ranging mathematical disciplines to the solution of diverse problems. He received the Fields Medal in 1994, and the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences in 2010.
