Abstract of the lecture
Prof. John Sexton’s latest book, Standing for Reason: the University in a Dogmatic Age, has been recently published by Yale University Press and its Chinese translation is forthcoming before the end of 2019. The lecture will present and discuss the top challenges facing American universities as Prof. Sexton observed, articulated and analyzed in his new book: dogmatism, unilateralism, and meaningful access to education. He envisions that American universities as engines of knowledge and American university leaders as stewards of thought must embrace and pursue certain policies. These policies will be required to uphold the university’s unique role as “a guardian of civil debate, nuanced complexity, and global intercultural understanding in a world ungently in need of all three.” He will also offer an insight for university students as they seek to “change the world” to apply their value systems with a dose of wisdom “in the Confucian ever-expanding circles of human relatedness.”
