Abstract

There are remarkable similarities between rapidly varying free-space electromagnetic fields known as super-oscillations and the evanescent fields of plasmonic nanostructures. In this lecture, the speaker will show that superoscillatory fields in free space (akin plasmonic fields at metal interfaces) have deeply subwavelength scale structures with energy nano-vortices, phase singularities and energy backflows of light. Finally, he will also demonstrate how supersoscillatory fields can be used in super-resolution imaging and nanoscale metrology.

About the speaker

Prof. Nikolay Zheludev received his MSc, PhD and DSc from the Moscow State University in 1978, 1981 and 1992 respectively. He joined the faculty at University of Southampton in 1991 and is currently the Professor of Physics there.

Prof. Zheludev is a world leader in the field of experimental nanophotonics and metamaterials. The new research fields of nanophotonics and metamaterials are closely interlinked. The term "nanophotonics" was coined only a few years ago and is now a major research direction in optical physics and engineering. Driven by the dream of untapped device functionality, nanophotonics studies the exciting science of the interaction of light with nanostructures, at the size scale where optical, electronic, structural, thermal and mechanical properties are deeply interdependent.

Prof. Zheludev received the Thomas Young Medal and Award by the Institute of Physics in 2015. He was also elected a Foreign Member of the US National Academy of Engineering (2019), a Fellow of the UK Royal Society (2018), a Fellow of the Optical Society (2004) and a Fellow of the Institute of Physics (1994).
