IAS Bank of East Asia Professor Ching Tang is awarded 2019 Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology

The Inamori Foundation, Kyoto, Japan announced that Prof. Ching W. Tang, the IAS Bank of East Asia Professor of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, is the recipient of the 2019 Kyoto Prize in Advanced Technology. Prof. Tang is honored for his “Pioneering Contributions to the Birth of High-Efficiency Organic Light-Emitting Diodes (OLED) and Their Applications”. He is a Hong Kong native and the first person of Chinese descent to win the Kyoto Prize since it was established in 1985.

The Kyoto Prize is awarded by the Inamori Foundation annually to individuals who have made global achievements in the categories of Advanced Technology, Basic Sciences, and Arts and Philosophy. Each laureate will receive a diploma, a 20K gold Kyoto Prize medal, and a prize money of 100 million yen. The formal award ceremony will be held on Nov 10, 2019 in Kyoto, Japan.

Two IAS Senior Visiting Fellows Elected to American Academy of Arts and Sciences

Two IAS Senior Visiting Fellows, Prof. Yifan Cheng and Prof. Kam-Biu Luk have been elected new members of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences for the 2019 class. This honor is to recognize the outstanding achievements of individuals in academia, the arts, business, government, and public affairs. Prof. Cheng is among the seven representatives of Biochemistry, Biophysics, and Molecular Biology while Prof. Luk is one of six physicists elected.

The Pioneering Work of IAS Senior Visiting Fellow Professor Paul SCHIMMEL and IAS Senior Fellow Professor ZHANG Mingjie Leads to New Investigational Therapeutic for Lung Disease

A potential therapeutic and lead clinical candidate, ATYR1923, for patients suffering from pulmonary sarcoidosis (a rare form of fibrotic lung disease with no known cure), was discovered through the collaboration of researchers from HKUST and Pangu BioPharma, a Hong Kong subsidiary of aTyr Pharma, Inc. which was co-founded by IAS Senior Visiting Fellow Prof. Paul SCHIMMEL. IAS Senior Fellow and Kerry Holdings Professor of Science ZHANG Mingjie has been the project coordinator of the Pangu collaboration at HKUST. He believes the important discoveries exemplifies Hong Kong’s translational science and early discovery capabilities.
