Ronnie C Chan
Chairman of Hang Lung Properties

Mr Ronnie C Chan is Chairman of Hang Lung Group Limited and its subsidiary Hang Lung Properties Limited. Both are publicly listed companies in Hong Kong, dealing in real estate development, investment and management.

Founded in 1960, the Group has been expanding into mainland China since 1992. Following successes in Shanghai, since 2005 Hang Lung has been investing US$11 billion and building a number of world-class commercial complexes in major Chinese cities including Tianjin, Shenyang, Jinan, Wuxi, Dalian, Kunming and Wuhan. Mr Chan also co-founded the privately held Morningside group which, in the past 26 years, has owned and managed businesses in manufacturing, public transport operations, outdoor advertising, media, healthcare, online game operators, high-tech and biotech investments, developmental capital investments and other venture capital investments around the world.

In 1997, Mr Chan helped found the Calgary, Canada based Morningside Music Bridge for young classical musicians. In addition, Mr Chan is actively involved with many other non-profits, philanthropic endeavors, and educational organizations. He is Chairman of the Executive Committees of One Country Two Systems Research Institute and of Better Hong Kong Foundation. He founded and chairs China Heritage Fund, is a co-founding director of The Forbidden City Cultural Heritage Conservation Foundation, Beijing, and is an Advisor and former Vice President of China Development Research Foundation in Beijing. Internationally, Mr Chan is Co-Chair of Asia Society and Chairman of its Hong Kong Center, a Director of the Board of Peter G. Peterson Institute for International Economics and a member of Council on Foreign Relations, National Committee on United States-China Relations, and Committee of 100. He is Founding Chairman Emeritus of Asia Business Council, a former Chairman of Hong Kong-United States Business Council, and a former member of the governing board of World Economic Forum.

Mr Chan serves or has served on the governing or advisory bodies of several think tanks and universities, including Tsinghua University, Fudan University, University of Southern California, East-West Center, Pacific Council on International Policy, Eisenhower Fellowships, and The Maureen and Mike Mansfield Foundation. Mr Chan is a frequent speaker at international conferences and has published numerous articles in International Herald Tribune, Financial Times, Newsweek, Fortune, Asian Wall Street Journal, Far Eastern Economic Review and Japan Times.

 

Tony F Chan
President of HKUST

Professor Tony F Chan assumed the presidency of HKUST on 1 September 2009.

Professor Chan’s scientific background is in Mathematics, Computer Science and Engineering. He received his PhD in Computer Science from Stanford University. He taught at Yale University before joining UCLA as Professor of Mathematics in 1986. He was appointed Chair of the Department of Mathematics in 1997 and served as Dean of Physical Science from 2001 to 2006. From 2006 to 2009, Professor Chan was Assistant Director of the Mathematical and Physical Sciences Directorate at the U.S. National Science Foundation (NSF).

Professor Chan is an elected member of the US National Academy of Engineering (NAE), a senior member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) and an elected fellow of both the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) and the American Association for the Advancement of Science. Professor Chan was one of the world’s most cited mathematicians.

Professor Chan is currently a member of the Board of Trustees of the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST) in Saudi Arabia, President’s Advisory Council of the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST), Scientific Advisory Board of the University of Vienna, and the United States Committee of 100. Professor Chan is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Innovation and Technology Commission of the Hong Kong Government and the Steering Committee of the Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation. He was a member of the Selection Committee for the Shaw Prize in Mathematical Sciences in 2012 and 2013.

UC RUSAL’s current capacity could produce 4.5 million tonnes of aluminium, and11.5 million tonnes of alumina. RUSAL is comprised of 14 aluminium smelters, 11 alumina refineries, 8 bauxite mines, and 4 foil mills. The Company also has three aluminium powder metallurgy plants and produces cryolite, aluminium fluoride and cathodes. RUSAL has its own R&D and engineering capabilities and owns the RA-300, RA-400 and RA-500 technologies.
