Welcome
Welcome to the IAS Asia Pacific Workshop on Condensed Matter Physics (APW)! APW is an annual event for condensed matter physicists in the Asia Pacific region to meet with scholars from other continents to exchange new ideas and developments in frontier topics. The first APW was held in late 2003 in Sendai, Japan, and since then the APW has been held in Hong Kong, Sendai, Beijing, Okinawa, Taipei, Sendai, Seoul, Hanoi and Wako. Expanding from a bi-annual event, the APW has been held annually in recent years. The Founding Chair of the APW Committee is Prof Sadamichi Maekawa from Japan, who had served as the Chair for over eight years. At present, members of the Committee are from (in alphabetical order) Australia, (Mainland) China, Hong Kong, Iran, Israel, Japan, Korea, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Taiwan, Turkey and Vietnam. The meeting location of the annual APW is decided by the APW Committee, which consists of at least one representative from each country or region. The themes of the past APWs have covered many frontier topics including strongly correlated systems, high Tc cuprates and pnictides superconductivity, spintronics, graphene, and topological insulators and superconductors. With the continuous development of condensed matter physics in the Asia Pacific region, we anticipate more scholars from more countries or regions to join the APW in the future.
The 11th APW will be held in Hong Kong on 14-16 December 2012. The Workshop will be hosted by the
Institute for Advanced Study (IAS) of
The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). The nice weather and the cosmopolitan city welcome you with an exciting workshop program. We hope you will enjoy the workshop, and look forward to welcoming you in Hong Kong.
