Breakthrough in Unveiling the Mechanism through which Genetic Mutations of a Motor Protein Lead to Hereditary Deaf-and-Blindness

Prof Mingjie ZHANG, Chair Professor of Life Science and his research team including IAS Fellow Dr Zhiyi Wei, have achieved significant breakthrough in explaining how genetic mutations of Motor Protein Myosin VIIa leads to hereditary deaf-and-blindness. This is excellent news for the medical profession in developing preventive and remedial measures against hereditary deaf-and-blindness.

HKUST Appoints Prof Henry Tye as IAS Director

The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology announced the appointment of Prof Henry TYE as Director of the Institute for Advanced Study with effect from January 2011. Currently Horace White Professor of Physics at Cornell University, Prof Tye grew up in Hong Kong and received his PhD from Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1974. His primary research interest is in elementary particle theory, including topics such as high energy phenomena, interface between particle physics and cosmology and superstring theory.

Nobel Laureate Eric Maskin Joins HKUST IAS as Visiting Member
