IAS PROGRAM ON INVERSE PROBLEMS, IMAGING AND PARTIAL DIFFERENTIAL EQUATIONS
Multiwave Imaging in Attenuating Media
Mr Benjamin Palacios, University of Washington and The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology
Date : 22 Nov 2017 (Wednesday)
Time : 11:00 am - 12:30 pm
Venue : IAS4042, 4/F, Lo Ka Chung Building, Lee Shau Kee Campus, HKUST

Abstract

The inverse photoacoustic/thermoacoustic tomography (PAT/TAT) problem consists in the recovery of an initial internal source from a single boundary observation of ultrasound waves. In medical imaging, it has been observed that the attenuation of the waves caused by biological tissue is not negligible and therefore needs to be considered in the modeling of the problem. In this talk, the speaker will give a review of some results in the mathematical analysis of the PAT/TAT inverse problem focusing on the case of attenuating media.

About the speaker

Mr Benjamin Palacios obtained his BSc and MSc in Mathematical Engineering from the University of Chile in 2010 and in 2012 respectively. He is currently a PhD candidate in Mathematics under the supervision of Prof Gunther Uhlmann at the University of Washington. In Fall 2017, he is a Research Assistant at the IAS.

Mr Palacios’s research interests are on analytical and numerical aspects of partial differential equations (PDE) with an emphasis on inverse problems and PDE Control, inverse problems with applications in medical and geophysical imaging and microlocal analysis.
