Abstract (Prof. Xie)

Prof. Paul M. ROMER of New York University Leonard N. Stern School of Business, who equally shared the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel 2018 with Prof. William D. NORDHAUS of Yale University, Prof. Romer is the pioneer of "Endogenous Growth Theory" that emphasizes increasing returns, knowledge spillover, human capital and institution as the main determinants of technological innovation and economic growth. As one of his handful PhD students, Prof. Xie Danyang will summarize his understanding of Prof. Romer's academic contribution and share his observations on Prof. Romer's other more adventurous endeavors.

 

About the speakers

Prof. Wang Pengfei is a Professor of Economics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, as well as an Associate Editor of Journal of Mathematical Economics and the B.E. Journal of Macroeconomics. He received his BS in Economics from Jilin University in 2000 followed by his MA in Economics from Peking University in 2003, and his PhD in Economics from Cornell University in 2007.

Prof. Wang’s research fields are macroeconomics and finance. His main research areas are the macroeconomic implications of asset bubbles and crashes, sentiments and aggregate fluctuations under uncertainty, and macroeconomics with financial and informational frictions. He has published extensively in top economics and finance journals including American Economic Review, American Economic Journal: Macroeconomics, Econometrica, The Economic Journal, Journal of Economic Theory, The Journal of Finance, Journal of Financial Economics, and Journal of Monetary Economics. Since 2012, Prof. Wang has been ranked among top 100 young economists by IDEAS, the largest bibliographic database in Economics.

Over the course of his career, Prof. Wang has taught introductory, intermediate and advanced macroeconomics to BA, MA and PhD students.

Prof. Xie Danyang is a Professor of Economics at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST). He received his PhD in Economics from the University of Chicago in 1992. Having started an academic career in 1991 at the University of Montreal, Prof. Xie joined HKUST in July 1993. He has been teaching courses such as Macroeconomics at all levels and China in the Global Economy for the MBAs and EMBAs. His research interest includes endogenous growth, fiscal policy, and money and banking. After serving at the International Monetary Fund as Economist and Senior Economist during 2000 – 2004, Prof. Xie returned to HKUST in July 2004 and became the Head of the Department of Economics between April 2007 and June 2010. Later he was appointed as the Director of Shui On Center for China Business and Management at HKUST between May 2011 and July 2013. He was a member of the Currency Board Sub-Committee of the Exchange Fund Advisory Committee between 2011 and 2016 and the Dean of the Economics and Management School of Wuhan University between January 2014 and June 2017.
