Abstract

Recently, many high concrete dams have been constructed or under planning in the west region of China. Most of them are located in high seismicity regions. The aseismic behavior of these high dams is a pivotal factor in safety considerations. In this lecture, recent advances in the seismic evaluation of high dams in China will be reviewed and introduced. A model adopting the spectral element method is employed to simulate the seismic wave propagation processes from the source rupture to the scattering at dam site canyon. To study the dynamic behavior of the concrete dams, a comprehensive model has been developed, which can simulate the transverse joints open-close behavior, nonlinear dynamic behavior of concrete and rock foundation, radiation damping and the dynamic interaction of the coupled dam–reservoir-foundation system. Seismic vulnerability analysis has been also conducted to study the feasibility of reinforcement of the dams.

About the speaker

Prof Feng Jin received his PhD in Hydraulic Engineering from Tsinghua University in 1992. He began his academic career there as a lecturer and is currently a Changjiang Scholar Chair Professor. Prof Jin serves as the Vice Chairman of Committee of Hydraulic Structure of the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society and of the Committee of Hydraulic Engineering Education of the Chinese Ministry of Education.

Prof Jin has served as a principal investigator for many research projects and provided support to more than 20 large-scale hydraulic projects, including the Three Gorges, Xiaowan, Ertan, Xiluodu, Xiangjiaba Projects. He is the inventor of the rock-filled concrete dam technology and was granted more than 20 national patents.

Prof Jin received numerous awards including the Second Prize of the Chinese National Technology Invention Award (2017), the Second Prize of the Chinese National Science and Technology Progress Award (2012, 2010 and 2009), and the Third Prize of the Chinese National Natural Science Award (1999).
