Quantum Spin Liquid: From Drought to Deluge

Professor Patrick A. Lee
Department of Physics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology
Winner of 2005 Dirac Medal

Date: 8 January 2007 (Monday)
Time: 4:00 - 5:30 pm

After 30 years of search with no success, it now appears to have two experimental examples of quantum spin liquid. Professor Lee will explain why it is believed that these belong to two different, but equally exciting classes of spin liquids, i.e. with spinon Fermi surface and with Dirac spinon respectively, both coupled to U(1) gauge fields.
